Angkor, the capital of the Khmer Empire, was built by Khmer King Suryavarman II in the early 12th century.
Angkor is the best preserved temple in the kingdom of Angkor, it was one of the largest medieval cities in the world and was transformed over time into a Buddhist temple towards the end of the 12th century.
The kingdom of Angkor Vat is the main tourist place of the country and also the symbol of the country on the Cambodian flag.
The Angkor temple is admired for its grandeur, its architecture and the many bas-reliefs that adorn its walls. Many consider it the eighth wonder of the world with its beauty and impressive size. It also gives clues to the important hydraulic system of Angkor and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
