Description

Hospital chapel Angkor

Hospital Chapel Angkor Wat is a temple located inside the Angkor Wat complex, Cambodia. It was built in the 12th century during the reign of King Suryavarman II, who also built the main temple of Angkor Wat.
The Hospital Chapel temple was used as a place of care for priests and members of the royal court. It was equipped with an irrigation system to provide clean water for medical care and was also used for religious ceremonies. It is built in an architectural style similar to that of Angkor Wat, with thick sandstone walls, a central tower called “prasat” and galleries decorated with bas-reliefs and statues of Hindu deities.
The temple was abandoned after the fall of the Khmer Empire in the 15th century and was overrun by jungle for centuries. Today it is open to the public and is considered a symbol of the cultural and architectural richness of the ancient Khmer empire.

Architecture

The architecture of the Hospital Chapel Angkor Wat temple is similar to that of Angkor Wat, with thick sandstone walls, a central tower called a “prasat” and galleries decorated with bas-reliefs and statues of Hindu deities. The central tower is dedicated to Hindu deities and is decorated with bas-reliefs and statues that depict different incarnations of the deities and mythological scenes. The galleries are also decorated with bas-reliefs which represent scenes from daily life and mythological scenes.
The temple is built of sandstone, a strong and durable stone used for the construction of Khmer temples. The sandstone is precision cut to fit together perfectly, without the use of mortar or cement. This allowed the temple to withstand the elements for centuries.
Overall, the architecture of the Hospital Chapel Angkor Wat temple is an outstanding example of Khmer technology, engineering and art of the time. It is a fascinating testimony to the architecture, history and culture of the ancient Khmer empire. It is a testimony to the importance of medicine in the Khmer culture of the time and to the capacity of this culture to integrate this practice into its religious practices.
