Prasat Bei

Prasat Bei Temple is a Hindu temple located in the Banteay Chhmar region of Cambodia. It was built in the 13th century by King Jayavarman VII, who reigned from 1181 to 1218.
The Prasat Bei temple was considered a place of worship for Hindu devotees in the region. It was dedicated to the goddess of medicine, Prajnaparamita, and was considered a place for meditation and religious rituals.
The temple is built of sandstone, an abundant material in the region. It is made up of four main towers, each having a pyramid shape. The towers have terraced roofs which were originally covered with red tiles. The exterior walls are decorated with bas-reliefs depicting Hindu deities, scenes from daily life and battle scenes.
Over the centuries, the temple was abandoned and suffered significant damage. It was rediscovered by French archaeologists in the 19th century and was restored in the 1960s. Today it is open to the public and attracts thousands of visitors each year who come to admire its unique architecture and magnificent bas-reliefs.
